Every week another startup shows me its new outbound machine. There are agents that scrape and enrich lists, write the email and send the follow-up. The dashboards look incredible: thousands of touches, perfect sequencing, zero human effort.

Then I ask one question: why would this buyer care?

The room usually goes quiet.

Volume was never the problem. Relevance was. AI has made it nearly free to send a message, which means the only thing that still has value is a message worth receiving.

Automation scales whatever you feed it

An AI agent is a multiplier. Point it at a sharp insight about your buyer and it multiplies relevance. Point it at a generic value proposition and it multiplies noise, with your brand's name on every copy.

Most GTM automation today is built by people who deeply understand tools and workflows. That skill matters. But the agent is only as good as its brief. If nobody has done the work of understanding what the buyer fears, what they are measured on and what would make them look good internally, then the agent is personalizing around a company name and a funding round. Buyers can tell.

What the agent actually needs to know

Before I build a single workflow, I want answers to questions that come straight from consumer research:

  • What is the buyer's real job, beyond their title?
  • What keeps this project on their list, and what would make them quietly drop it?
  • Who do they need to convince, and what language does that person speak?
  • What have they already tried, and why did it disappoint them?

These answers become the operating instructions for research, content and outreach agents. Suddenly personalization has a point of view. The message isn't "I saw you raised a Series B." It's "Teams at your stage usually hit this wall with their data pipelines. Here's how others got past it."

Insight first, then scale

The winning GTM teams of the next few years won't be the ones with the most agents. They'll be the ones whose agents understand people. Build the insight, then let the machines carry it to every account you care about.
